Salaries for business school staff

11th March 2020

We are pleased to publish our analysis of salaries of UK business school staff. The report looks at academic and non-academic staff by salary range, gender and ethnicity. The briefing is based on newly released data from the HESA Staff Record for 2018/19 for staff within the cost centre group of ‘Administrative & Business Studies’.

The analysis found variation in the proportions of staff from the various ethnic groups in each salary band and there is also variation by gender. The proportion of academic staff (both genders) from the Black ethnic group within the highest salary bracket is 6%, and the proportion of staff from the White ethnic group in the highest salary bracket is 25%. For staff from the Asian ethnicity 16% have a salary in the highest bracket.

In the case of male academics, 20% of those from the Asian ethnicity have a salary in the highest range, and for the black ethnicity the proportion is 6%. For males within the White ethnicity 30% have a salary in the highest range. For female academics, 11% of those from the Asian group have a salary in the highest range, and for the Black ethnic group the proportion is 6%. In relation to females from the White ethnic group, 20% earn within the highest bracket.

For non-academic staff (both genders), 12% of staff from the Asian ethnicity have a salary in the second highest bracket or above, and this is 10% for staff from the Black ethnicity. For staff from the White ethnicity, 15% have a salary in the second highest bracket or higher. For male non-academic staff the population sizes are small for all ethnicities other than the White ethnic group. In relation to female non-academic staff, 12% of staff from the Asian ethnicity earn in the second highest salary range or above. For staff from the Black ethnic group the proportion is 9% and for staff of the White ethnicity 13%.
